Carry text into a new day

Put >>> on a line before the text you want to carry forward, and <<< on a line after it:

When creating a new daily note, day.txt copies every complete marked section from the nearest earlier daily note available on that device. The markers come along too. An existing day's note is not changed, and a section without a closing marker is not copied.

Calendar and search

A hollow marker means an empty note exists for that date. Filled markers indicate notes with text; wider markers indicate more text. No marker means there is no saved note for that day.

The editor's search looks within the current note. Search in the Notes browser looks across daily and named notes.

iCloud synchronization

Notes and revision history are saved locally and synchronize through your private iCloud database. Use the same iCloud account on each device. You can write and search offline; pending changes wait for iCloud to become available.

Once a change has reached iCloud, another device on the same account can retrieve it. Changes that are still waiting to upload exist only on the device where you made them. Deletions also synchronize, so iCloud sync is not a separate backup of everything you have ever written.

Delivery is automatic and may take time. Open day.txt on both devices and select the status dot for more information. A green dot confirms that the displayed version has been acknowledged by iCloud; it does not confirm that another device has received it.

If edits on two devices conflict, the app asks you to choose a version. If synchronization appears stuck, keep the app and its local data intact and contact support before reinstalling or deleting anything.

History and retention

Note history lets you preview and restore earlier versions. Restoring a version creates a new revision and preserves the text you were working on.

Choose to retain history for one day, one week, one month, one year, or indefinitely. One month is the default. Older automatic revisions are reduced to one per editing day, even with indefinite retention. Expiration removes history, not your current note. The retention setting synchronizes across devices.

Editor settings

Theme, palette, font, text size, line spacing, spell checking and autocorrect are saved locally on each device. You can use different settings on your Mac and iPhone.

Export and deletion

On Mac, use the File menu to export the current versions of all daily and named notes as plain-text files. The export does not include revision history or settings. Export is not available on iPhone or iPad.

Deleting a note permanently removes its text and history. Delete All Data in Settings removes the account's day.txt library through iCloud, including its notes and history. Other devices apply the reset when they reconnect using a compatible version. Appearance and editor settings stay on each device. Export anything you want to keep first.
